I'm currently reading "The Rock From Mars" by Kathy Sawyer. Wow. One of the guys involved was a senior geologist during NASA's Apollo program; he spent time with Neil Armstrong before the first moon landing, coaching Armstrong on what to pick up.

The book also touches on the problem of the lunar regolith that Armstrong brought back, and this one geologist fellow started analyzing the lunar "sand" or topsoil, one grain at a time!

If you're not familiar with the main "rock from Mars", beginning in the late 1980's it began to reveal stuff that looked like nematodes or fossil bacteria (?!) when viewed with the electron microscope, causing a great deal of controversy. Ok so nematodes are much bigger than bacteria but you get the idea.

Minor update, mid-October 2019: I noticed that the rock from Mars was covered in several articles in the New York Times. However casual browsers will not see this material as only subscribers get to see the "Times Machine" digital archives.
